Islamic Clerics Say Women Posting Photos on Facebook is Un-Islamic

I want to warn Muslim sisters and friends not to post their photos (especially without veil) on Facebook as it may put you in trouble. Two Islamic clerics from India, has passed this ruling, that Muslim females are not allowed to post their pictures on Facebook, as it is forbidden in Islam to show faces to unknown males. I fear that after this fatwa, problems of Muslim women using social networking sites  in India may arise. Read the complete news from IB Times:

Two prominent Islamic helplines based in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, are asking young callers to stay away from social networking sites.

The helplines are answered by Islamic clerics who help and guide people in understanding what is right and acceptable according to Islam.

According to a report on IBN Live, the clerics have especially asked women to refrain from creating profiles on popular networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, calling it un-Islamic.

“You can’t see someone’s face on Facebook and decide that you want to be friends. Look for ‘pyar aur mohabbat’ (love) in real life. Virtual relationships are not ‘faydaymand’ (profitable),” cleric Abul Irfan Naimul Halim Firagni Mahli said.

Mahli said mingling with someone in the real world is much better than bonding with them in the virtual world. He said most of his callers are young people inquiring about internet usage.

“If one is on Facebook for business purposes or for constructive purposes, then the account is justifiable,” he said.

However, Mahli particularly disapproved of women having an account on such sites for friendship. He also condemned women who upload their pictures.

“Women should not post pictures on Facebook or anywhere else on the Internet. This is un-Islamic,” he said.

Fellow cleric Maulana Saif Abbas Naqvi, supporting Mahli’s argument, said: “Women are not allowed to show their faces to anyone apart from their ‘mehram’ (close male relative like father and brothers). So posting pictures on Facebook is ‘haraam’ (banned).

“We are liberal. We are not Taliban-minded. When youngsters ask us if they can have a Facebook or Twitter profile, we allow that. But the Shariah (Islamic law) does not allow women to post pictures,” Naqvi said.

“Islam has prescribed hijab for women. They have been asked to hide their faces in public, so how can this be allowed on the internet?” he asked.

“We have seen so many relationships that blossomed on the internet going sour in the real world. ‘Dokha aur fareb se bachna chahiye’ (We should save ourselves from deceit and fraud),” said the cleric, who belongs to one of the famous families in Luknow.

According to the report, the number of calls to the helplines doubled during the holy month of Ramadan, with many wanting to know if it was allowed to log into Facebook during the fast.

“There is a hadith (a saying of Prophet Mohammed) that when the world is nearing its end, Satan will spread lies within minutes. We’ve seen rumors being circulated on the internet in no time. It is best to stay away from the virtual world,” Mahli concluded.

  1. Muhammad & Pictures:-

In the following Hadith reports, Muhammad made prohibitions which were of course copied and plagiarised – like most of the other important ideas in the Quran – from the Bible.
Leviticus 26.1″ You shall make no idols nor graven image, nor erect a pillar, nor shall you set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down to it; for I am the Lord your God”.

The instruction very clearly means not to create anything to which man should pray to. It NEVER meant not to paint or to sculpt animated forms for artistic purposes.

For reasons of allegedly protecting the Torah, the rabbis, in their wisdom, made a sweeping prohibition thus denying the Israelites from becoming important and contributing artists except in depecting fruits, flowers and geometric designs. Muhammad, blindly pursued the same idea.

The followers of Muhammad later excelled in such arts.

It is important to note that these prohibitions are not mentioned in any verse of the Quran.

In fact the words picture or pictures do not appear anywhere in the Quran describing a painting of any kind. This is one more instance where the Sunna supersedes the Quran.

Al-Muwatta Hadith Hadith 54.8 Pictures and Images
Malik related to me from Nafi from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad from A’isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that she bought a cushion which had pictures on it. When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw it, he stopped at the door and did not enter. She recognised disapproval on his face and said, “Messenger of Allah, I turn in repentance to Allah and His Messenger. What have I done wrong?” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “What is the meaning of this cushion?” She said, “I bought it for you to sit and recline on.” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Those who make such pictures will be punished on the Day of Rising. It will be said to them, ‘Bring to life what you have created’. Then he said, ‘The angels do not enter a house in which there are pictures.’ ”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 1.419 Narrated byAisha
Um Habiba and Um Salama mentioned about a church they had seen in Ethiopia in which there were pictures. They told the Prophet about it, on which he said, “If any religious man dies amongst those people they would build a place of worship at his grave and make these pictures in it. They will be the worst creature in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 3.428 Narrated bySaid bin Abu Al Hasan
While I was with Ibn ‘Abbas a man came and said, “O father of ‘Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures.” Ibn ‘Abbas said, “I will tell you only what I heard from Allah’s Apostle. I heard him saying, ‘Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.’ ” Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn ‘Abbas said to him, “What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 4.448 Narrated byAbu Talha
I heard Allah’s Apostle saying; “Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal).”

*** Muhammad’s fear of and loathing of dogs was personal and must have been based upon a traumatic experience that he had had when he was a child or as a shepherd; otherwise it is a particularly idiotic and totally unwarranted dogs prohibitions especially since these animals are amongst the most domesticated, the most loyal and the most loving of all the other animals. That is why most ‘Muslims’ do not have them at home***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 4.570 Narrated byIbn Abbas
The Prophet entered the Ka’ba and found in it the pictures of (Prophet) Abraham and Mary. On that he said’ “What is the matter with them ( i.e. Quraish)? They have already heard that angels do not enter a house in which there are pictures; yet this is the picture of Abraham. And why is he depicted as practicing divination by arrows?”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 4.571 Narrated byIbn Abbas
When the Prophet saw pictures in the Ka’ba, he did not enter it till he ordered them to be erased. When he saw (the pictures of Abraham and Ishmael carrying the arrows of divination, he said, “May Allah curse them (i.e. the Quraish)! By Allah, neither Abraham nor Ishmael practiced divination by arrows.”

*** The above statements of Muhammad could not have possibly been true considering the ‘facts’, as metioned in the Ahadith.

Muhammad had been visiting the Ka’ba since he was a young man and not once, in all the stories of the other Ahadith, nor in any verse in the Quran, was there any mention or report about such pictures existing in the Ka’ba.

The same Muhammad who riled so much against the rock gods of the Ka’ba, would have unhesitatingly also mentioned the alleged pictures in the Quran.

Bukhari should have known better than to include them as Sahih/truthful items in his book, since they contradict and defy logic and were clearly made up by Muhammad’s followers just like the hundreds of thousands of other alleged sayings and deeds of Muhammad that Bukhari discounted as utter fabrications and none sense.

In reality these stories were invented by Muhammad’s followers in similitude to Abraham’s destruction of his father’s idols, to give Muhammad a similar sense of great intellect, belief and originality ***

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 5.338 Narrated byIbn Abbas
Abu Talha, a companion of Allah’s Apostle and one of those who fought at Badr together with Allah’s Apostle told me that Allah’s Apostle said. “Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture.” He meant the images of creatures that have souls.

    Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.110/840/844 Narrated byAisha 3.318;

Aisha had a thick curtain (having pictures on it) and she screened the side of her house with it. The Prophet said to her, “Remove it from my sight, for its pictures are still coming to my mind in my prayers.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 7.833 Narrated byAbu Talha
The Prophet said, “Angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or there are pictures.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 8.130 Narrated byAisha
The Prophet entered upon me while there was a curtain having pictures (of animals) in the house. His face got red with anger, and then he got hold of the curtain and tore it into pieces. The Prophet said, “Such people as paint these pictures will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection .”

Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 9.165 Narrated byIbn Abbas
The Prophet said, “Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see, will be ordered to make a knot between two barley grains which he will not be able to do; and if somebody listens to the talk of some people who do not like him (to listen) or they run away from him, then molten lead will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and whoever makes a picture, will be punished on the Day of Resurrection and will be ordered to put a soul in that picture, which he will not be able to do.”

    Fatwa:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
The narration that clarifies that the angels do not enter a house where there is a dog or a picture is an authentic narration which is reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim, may Allaah have mercy upon them, and it is mentioned in Fatwa 88213. Since the narration is authentic, then a Muslim person should submit himself and be pleased with it even if he does not know the wisdom thereof. If he knows the wisdom, he should be more certain about it.
The scholars, may Allaah have mercy upon them, may seek the wisdom behind the angels not entering a house with a dog or a picture therein, however, it cannot be authoritatively asserted that what they mentioned is the very wisdom except with evidence.
For instance, An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said that it is due to that being an act of disobedience, or due to dogs eating impure food, or because having a dog and pictures at home is imitating the non-Muslims or for other reasons. Anyway, it is authentic that there is a prohibition in this regard whether or not the wisdom is known.
As regards the misconception of the angel of death and other angels entering the house where such things exist, then the answer lies in what As-Safaareeni, may Allaah have mercy upon him, from the Hanbali School of jurisprudence, and others said, that the angels meant in the narration are the angels of Blessings and Mercy. As regards the angel of death and the angels who are appointed to record our deeds, then the narration does not apply to them, as they never leave the human being.
With regard to performing the prayer while wearing clothes which contain pictures, then this is disliked; the evidence and wisdom for this is clarified in Fatwa 90506.
Concerning the exception of trees and the like, then this is due to the evidence in this regard and this is mentioned in Fatwa 83249. Even though these things have a life, it cannot be said that they have a soul. It is for this reason that Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “If you must make a portrait of anything, then let it be a tree or what does not have a soul.”
If a person draws a forbidden picture, he is imitating Allaah’s creation whether or not he intends to imitate, so such pictures are forbidden in any case.
Finally, we would like to emphasize again that a person is obliged to totally submit himself to the religious texts, and not contradict it by one’s own reasoning, because our minds are not able to realize all the wisdoms of the Islamic legislation.

    Fatwa No. : 90506

    Question:
We are working in Hamad Hospital here in Doha Qatar. They are giving employee cards with little employee details and photograph and it should be hanged in front of the dress that’s the rule. Shall we pray while that card with photo is on the front of our dress?
    Fatwa:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
The majority of the scholars, may Allaah have mercy upon them, are of the view that it is disliked to pray in clothes that have pictures, or hold [or carry] things that have pictures on them during the prayer as this distracts a person during his prayer. Anas, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, had a curtain with which she covered one side of her room, so the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, told her: “Take this curtain away from me, its pictures are distracting me from my prayer.” [Al-Bukhaari] Imaam Al-Bukhaari, may Allaah have mercy upon him, wrote a chapter in his book about this and entitled it: “The chapter of the dislikeability of performing the prayer in clothes that have pictures.”
So it is more appropriate to take off the card on which there is a picture during the prayer so that it will not distract the person from the prayer.

Taking photos of animate creatures for enjoyment
    Fatwa Date : Rabee’ Al-Aakhir 21, 1426 / 30-5-2005
    Question
I have a question regarding taking photos and making videos of living creatures. I want to know is this lawful according to Qur’an and Sunnah to take photos and make videos of one’s family and keep them as a memory and enjoy watching good events captured by these means.
    Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Forming images are of three kinds:
    1. Forming three-dimensional figures of living creatures by chiseling, molding or carving from solid material. Such images are forbidden in Shariah. There is no disagreement about that for the Hadith of the Prophet: “Image makers will be most severely punished by Allah on the Day of Resurrection”. [Reported by Imams Bukhari and Muslim]

Imam Tirmizi reported on the authority of Ibn Abbas that the Prophet said: “A person who eavesdrops upon a party will have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day Judgement, and one who paints the portrait of a living being will be punished and called upon to infuse life into it which he will not be able to do”.
    2. Making pictures by hand such as paintings on walls, prints on clothes drawing on papers, etc. The majority of the Muslim scholars are of the opinion that such images are also prohibited in Shariah. They generalize the rule of prohibiting the imitation of Allah in Creating to these pictures also. The Hadith on which they base this rule is that the Prophet said: “The most grievous torment for the people on the Day of Resurrection would be for those who try to imitate Allah in the act of Creation”. [Reported by Imam Bukhari]
    3. Photography by camera or video. The Muslim scholars have two different opinions concerning this matter. Some of them permit it while others do not permit it. We side with those who say that if the photography does not contain any forbidden matter such as the pictures of uncovered women or the pictures made for the purpose of honouring certain Creatures, etc. then there is no harm in such photography. Since the reason for which the photography of living beings is forbidden, i.e. imitating of Allah’s Creation, does not exist in photography of camera or video. But it is merely taking a photo of what Allah has Created, especially if there is a legal purpose such as taking a passport photo, making photo to show the performance of Mujahideen or recording Islamic lectures, etc. then it is permitted.

In spite of the details mentioned above we emphasize the fact that avoiding all kinds of photography is better to avoid doubts and to the differing opinions of scholars.
As for hanging the pictures of living beings, it is safer not to hang them.
However, making images, prints, statues and photographs of inanimate objects, such as trees, moon, sun and mountains, is absolutely permissible.
    Allah knows best.

Fatwa Title : Praying while hanging ID cards with photo
    Fatwa No. : 90506
    Fatwa Date : 13/09/2005
