[Times of India] Communal tension gripped Tanda town of Ambedkarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night after a local VHP leader was shot dead by unidentified gunmen. Keeping in view the simmering tension over the murder, a heavy contingent of security forces including PAC jawans was deployed in the town.
According to official sources, three unidentified gunmen came to the chemist shop of the VHP leader Ram Mohan Gupta in Tanda town and fired three bullets from point blank range. Locals immediately took Gupta to the district hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
After the killing, activists of VHP and Hindu Yuva Vahini blocked traffic on Tanda-Akbarpur road. The activists raised anti-government and inflammatory slogans, locals said.
In March this year, Ram Mohan Gupta’s uncle, Ram Babu Gupta — also a VHP leader — was killed in a similar fashion. After the killing, sporadic communal clashes were reported from some villages in Tanda, forcing the administration to keep the areas under curfew for over a week.
The Hindu Reported:
Shot at point-blank range
Inspector-General (Law and Order) Raj Kumar Vishwakarma told journalists that Ram Mohan Gupta (30) was shot by three unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle. One of the assailants, who barged into his medical store at the Hans crossing, shot him with a 32-bore pistol.
As news spread, angry relatives and BJP workers brought the body to the streets and staged a chakka jam, which was lifted following police intervention. After autopsy, the last rites were performed under heavy security.
Mr. Vishwakarma said the police were trying to find out whether there was a link between the killings of the uncle and the nephew. Two persons, Irfan and Mukul Misra, were arrested in connection with the March 3 murder of Ram Babu Gupta and police investigations revealed that it was the fallout of a land dispute. Now Irfan, who was released on bail, and two others, Shahid and Rehman, have been detained.
The police are also looking into the role of the local Samajwadi Party MLA, Azimul alias Pahelwan, in Wednesday’s crime, the IG said.
