Polio Vaccination is a Hindu Drug, Muslim will be in Hell if they take it


[Global Post] KARACHI, Pakistan — When health workers approached Zulfikar Quaid about inoculating his three children against polio, Quaid picked up an old cricket bat inside his home and waved it at them. “Get out of my house,” he yelled. “My children are Muslim and we don’t need your dirty Hindu drugs.”

The health workers he was yelling at were stunned — though they’d become accustomed to hearing some Karachi residents’ resistance to vaccines, they’d never heard it linked to a Hindu conspiracy before.

Zarmina, the lead health worker, asked Quaid’s wife, who was standing beside her husband, why they were refusing the drugs. “The Hindus are lacing it with pig’s blood to send us all to hell,” she explained. Quaid was still holding the bat and waving it menacingly, and Zarmina, by now familiar with anti-vaccine fervor, decided that a quick retreat was the safest option for her. She motioned to her partner that they should leave immediately. In the past 18 months, 34 health workers had been killed for attempting to administer the polio vaccine.

Since 1978, when the World Health Organization’s Expanded Program for Immunization was launched in Pakistan, conspiracy theories about polio have been rampant. While the supposed conspirators change frequently, the myth is usually the same and involves someone attempting to rid the world of Muslims — Zarmina and her fellow health workers have heard that the polio vaccine is part of a Western (or US or Jewish) conspiracy to sterilize all Muslims, or that Mossad or the CIA is orchestrating the campaign to kill Muslims outright.

“When the polio vaccination program was initially launched, international organizations didn’t take into account that there was very little engagement with the local government,” said a senior World Health Organization official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Because the drugs and information was all coming from another country, people became very suspicious of vaccine programs.”

The immunization effort in Pakistan took a major hit when in 2007, Maulana Fazlullah, the current chief of the Pakistani Taliban, announced a ban on polio vaccinations in Swat. After news broke that a CIA had launched a fake hepatitis B vaccination program to obtain information about Osama Bin Laden, the theories gained even more prominence in Pakistan. Since then, militants and religious leaders alike have warned people against the polio vaccine and targeted health workers like Zarmina for participating in the immunization campaign.

The problem isn’t confined to Pakistan. In Nigeria, Ibrahim Datti Ahmed, a physician and the president of Nigeria’s Supreme Council for Sharia Law accused Americans of lacing the vaccination with an anti-fertility agent that sterilized children.  It took years for international organizations to combat the rumor and Polio is still endemic to Nigeria.  India, too, battled conspiracy theories about sterilization and poisoning, however unlike Pakistan, India has a stronger local government program, which has aided the World Health Organization’s efforts to eradicate the disease.

“In Pakistan, conspiracy theories are almost an Olympic sport,” explained C. Christine Fair, a Pakistan scholar and assistant professor at Georgetown University. While Fair is quick to clarify that conspiracy theories aren’t unique to Pakistan, “the effects of [conspiracy theories] are more pernicious in Pakistan than they might be elsewhere because the stakes are so high.”

It’s not just vaccination campaigns that inspire bizarre rumors. Many people believe that the CIA planted the Taliban to weaken the Pakistani state and that Malala Yusufzai was a CIA agent. Four days after Osama bin Laden’s death was announced, a YouGov/University of Cambridge poll found that 66 percent of Pakistanis did not believe he had really been killed.

The Pakistani media often magnifies disinformation rather than debunking it. In 2010, The Washington Post chronicled the frustration of the US embassy in the country, confronted, for example, with reports in the media that all Pakistanis are stripped naked at American airports.

Fair isn’t one to mince words: “Part of the problem is that in Pakistan, lies are built into the very fabric of the educational system,” she said, referring to reports that state textbooks often have factual inaccuracies about Pakistan’s national history, along with a great deal of anti-minority and anti-Western language.

However, unlike other popular conspiracy theories, the polio conspiracy theories are easily rejected by educated people in Pakistan.  “Since their children were born they’ve known that you give them shots for MMR [Measles Mumps and Rubella] and DPT [Diptheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus],” said one WHO official of the more privileged and educated parents. “They’ve heard about the Expanded Program on Immunization, they’ve seen countries where polio isn’t really a problem anymore.”

Acceptance of the benefits of vaccination tend to go hand in hand with general knowledge about the scientific benefits of medicine, he added.

“These are the same people that will go to a licensed doctor instead of a faith healer when problems first arise,” he said. “However, if you don’t know all of this, if your child isn’t even getting a first tetanus shot, much less a booster, you’re not really going to know that the polio vaccine isn’t an evil western import.”

In fact, many of the falsities about polio are spread by religious leaders, who often don’t have a formal education, but can disseminate information to a large number of people in their local language. Pakistan’s educational system is vastly unregulated — ghost schools pepper the official records, even lower-income children prefer to study at cheaper private institutions than public schools, and madrassas, religious schools run out of a local mosque, are free alternatives adopted by many families.

Though in past decades the religious clergy in Pakistan would have studied Islam along with other sciences and subjects, now they’ve usually only graduated from the local madrassas with little to no time in a secular school.

Religious leaders in Pakistan are highly influential, and micropolitics incentivize the spreading of anti-polio vaccine rumors. “They’re competing for congregations,” Fair said. “As the clerics are tied to [religious political parties], even if they know what they’re saying is a dangerous pack of lies, they have no incentive to say it.”

Earlier this month, Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, a religious scholar and leader of a faction of the conservative political party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, came out in support of the polio vaccine, issuing a fatwa against polio. Though not many local-clerics followed suit, his announcement was viewed as a major victory in the fight against polio.

But the rumors are so pervasive, and the suspicion of officials so great, that in some Karachi neighborhoods, residents aren’t swayed even by the fatwa urging them to vaccinate their children.

“Why is the government giving me polio drops for free?” asked one resident of Orangi town, who wondered why this would be an initiative the government would take when education, basic healthcare, and access to water wasn’t something that they provided for her.

Though community-based health workers like Zarmina say that they’ve tried to engage people in conversations about the misconceptions surrounding polio, she and international aid workers are too frightened to openly talk about the vaccine. In July 2012, a WHO doctor, Constant Dedo, was shot during a visit to Gadap Town, Karachi. Last year, a Rotary International volunteer who headed a polio center in the SITE area was shot dead.

For Zarmina the battle is personal. She became a community health worker — part of the WHO funded Lady Health Worker program — in 2002 after her eldest daughter died after contracting measles.

“Until my daughter was lying dead in the hospital, I didn’t even know that there was a disease called measles, or that I could have gotten all of my children vaccinated,” Zarmina said. “The lady who talked to me told me about the Lady Health Worker program and after she helped vaccinate my other children, I went to see if I could work with her.”

After six months of intensive training she began acting as a liaison between the ministry of health and her community. She prides herself on convincing reluctant parents to vaccinate their children.

Quaid’s particular conspiracy theory was new to Zarmina, so she was especially taken aback by the claims. She was working in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Karachi. Usually Zarmina works in the same neighborhood that she lives in, and has worked to foster connections with the community there. But on National Immunization Days, Lady Health Workers are deployed to go door to door and vaccinate children in areas where they may have little experience. She said that she’d never been to this area of the city before, and that’s why she was especially hesitant to engage Quaid in further debate.

A few hours later, she heard that shots had been fired elsewhere in the city and that three people had died administering the vaccine. She’s not sure that she’ll participate in the next drive. She’s not the only one. Polio workers are terrified that if they participate in another vaccination drive, they won’t come home. The consequences have ripple effects across the globe. Last year Pakistan saw an uptick in confirmed cases of polio — the two other countries where polio is endemic, Afghanistan and Nigeria, managed to reduce their number of cases.

Late last year, a polio outbreak in Syria was linked to a strain from Peshawar. With both Nigeria and Afghanistan reducing the number of polio cases in 2013, health experts warn that Pakistan may become the only exporter of the polio virus in the world.

“I used to think that by talking individually with the families in my neighborhood, I could help stop this crippling disease,” Zarmina said. “Now, I’m not so sure.”

    A couple was stoned to death for the crime of suspected adultery in Pakistan. The young couple, Daraz Kahn, 24 and Hayat Bibi, 27, each of whom were married to other people, were accused by the woman’s husband.
    An Islamic cleric issued a fatwa according to sharia (Islamic) law that they should both be stoned to death and a mob, led by Bibi’s husband, carried out the sentence.
    Although stoning is legal in Pakistan, it is only legal if ordered by a federal or provincial court. No date, no stonings have taken place legally in Pakistan.
    Locals in Loralai, where two other couples were recently stoned to death, report that Bibi went into hiding about a week ago when the charges became known. She reportedly emerged when she heard that the mob had taken Kahn. The mob forced her to watch Kahn being stoned to death, after which – led by her husband and brothers — they set upon her, hurling bricks and rocks at her until she died.
    Six people were arrested in the aftermath for the stoning: Bibi’s husband and the cleric who issued the fatwa, as well as Bibi’s father and brother and Kahn’s father and uncle.
    Sarfaraz Bugti, the home minister for the region, ordered the local police chief be dismissed for not taking action at the time of the stoning.
    “It is a shameful act and the people involved in stoning the man and the woman will be brought to justice,” said Bugti.
    However, it is widely expected that police will take no action against those arrested. Federal courts have little jurisdiction in remote areas of the country and even if charges are brought, conviction rates in honor killings such as these are between 5 and 10 percent. Such cases are typically tied up in the courts for years.
    In addition, according to the law, the victim’s family can forgive the killer, exonerating him from all charges. When the victim has been killed by family members, there is simply no case.
    Stoning is legal in 15 Muslim countries that base their legal systems on sharia law.

    A couple has been stoned to death for adultery in a remote southwest region of Pakistan on the orders of an Islamic cleric.
    Daraz Khan, 25, and Hayat Bibi, 27, were killed by a mob led by Mrs Bibi’s husband in the Loralai district in Balochistan.
    Ms Bibi went into hiding a week ago when the alleged affair was discovered, but then came forward when she heard that the mob had captured Mr Khan, locals reported.

    The mob, led by her husband and brothers, then threw rocks and bricks at her until she died.
    Ms Bibi’s husband had approached a local cleric demanding the couple should be stoned to death in compliance with Shariah law, reported The Times.
    Stoning is legal in Pakistan, but only if the sentence is passed by a federal or provincial court, which did not happen in this case where the death was sanctioned only by tribal elders.
    No one has ever legally been stoned to death in Pakistan.
    Ms Bibi’s husband, the cleric, and four others have been arrested and the bodies of the couple are being exhumed today to prove they were stoned to death.
    ‘It is a shameful act and the people involved in stoning the man and the woman will be brought to justice,’ said Sarfaraz Bugti, the home minister for Baluchistan.
    In Pakistan, a conviction for murder can carry the death sentence, but despite Mr Bugti’s outrage, it is widely expected that no action will be taken against the six men
    Police rarely intervene in cases such as this one and the federal courts have little authority in remote regions of the country, including Balochistan, meaning that it is often left to local tribal and religious leaders to mete out punishments, which are usually harsher than the law allows.

    Even if cases of so-called ‘honour killings’ are brought to court, they often take years to be heard. The national conviction rate is between 5 and 10 percent.
    If someone is convicted, the victim’s family can forgive the killers, which is a major loophole considering the killers are often members of the victim’s family.
    Two other couples accused of adultery have been killed in Loralai district in the last two months. ‘Honour killings’ for adultery are not uncommon in Pakistan, but stonings are rare.
    Last year a young mother of two, Afridi Bibi, no relation to Hayat Bibi, was stoned to death by a mob led by her uncle for carrying a mobile phone in Punjab province of Pakistan.
    The death sparked fears that stoning might be on the rise in certain countries, including Pakistan and Afghanistan.
    The practice of stoning is legal in 15 Muslim countries and is set out as a specific punishment for adultery under several interpretations of Sharia law.
    Its supporters say stoning is legitimised by the Hadith – the deeds and saying of the Prophet Muhammad – though there is no mention of the practice in the Koran.

    IRAN HANGS WELL LOVED HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST, POET

    Iran has executed human rights activist Hashem Shaabani, a 32- year-old Arab-Iranian, for “waging war on God.”

    Other charges included sowing corruption on earth, propaganda against the Islamic Republic and acting against national security, according to a 2012 sentence handed down by the Ahvaz Islamic Revolutionary Court.

    A well-known and loved poet in Iran, Shabaani was originally arrested in 2011 and “confessed” the crime of terrorism on Iranian state-controlled Press TV after being subjected to months of torture and interrogation.

    However, in a letter that was published by Ahwaz News Agency in 2013, Shaabani said he had “never participated in any armed activity, whatever the motives.”
    He said, “I started my journey wielding my pen against the tyranny that is trying to enslave and imprison minds and thoughts …”
    Shabaani continued, “I have tried to defend the legitimate right that every people in this world should have which is the right to live freely with full civil rights. With all these miseries and tragedies, I have never used a weapon to fight these atrocious crimes except the pen.”
    According to the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, Shabaani was executed along with his friend Hadi Rashedi, both members of the Dialogue Institute that was outlawed by Iranian regime.
    Shabaabi was outspoken against the mistreatment of ethnic Arabs in Iran’s Khuzestan province, which borders Iraq. He was arrested in early 2011 on charges of being a moharabeh, an “enemy of G-d.”
    Radio Free Europe reported that Shaabani was hanged after his sentence was approved by President Hassan Rohani last week.
    As Clarion Project reported, the number of executions in Iran has significantly increased since President Hassan Rouhani took over the office from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in August 2013.

    Shaabani taught Arabic literature in high schools and organized “peace festivals” (which were banned by the government). He held a masters degree in political science and was the father of one child. His poetry was published online under the pen name Abo Ala Al-Ofoghi.

    The number of executions in Iran has significantly increased since President Hassan Rouhani took over the office from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in August 2013.
    According to statistics provided by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center — which lists those executed by name, date, location and crime — Iran has put to death 529 people this year, 300 alone since Rouhani assumed office in August.
    Belying his image painted by the Western as a “moderate,” Rouhani has now catapulted his country into the position of being the world’s leader in executions per capita.
    The most common charge garnering the punishment of death was drug trafficking, followed by rape, murder and apostasy.
    Reports of the statistics come in conjunction with the first visit in six years by the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Iran scheduled for December 12-17. During the delegation’s last visit in 2007, Iran publicly executed a number of prisoners while the Europeans were in Tehran.
    Over the past six years, the European parliamentarians had demanded as a precondition to any visit that Iran provide them with access to political prisoners and opposition activists during any visit. Iran refused and hence the Europeans cancelled all visits by their delegation.
    This time, however, with the parliamentarians term of office set to expire in 2014 and the world’s focus on the recent nuclear deal with Iran –and away from Iran’s human right record — a number of members of the delegation agreed to visit Iran with no such preconditions.
    However a number of senior delegates have refused to visit including three Italians — Vice Chairman Potito Salatto, Oreste Rossi and Marco Scurria — as well as European Parliament Vice President Alexander Alvaro from Germany and Geoffrey Van Orden from the UK.
    In addition, members of the Europeans People’s Party (the parliament’s largest political group) as well as the European Conservatives and Reformists Group have also refused to visit under the current conditions.
    Whereas Iran initiated these “friendship” visits through its embassy in Brussels in 2005, it has refused all visits from the U.N. Special Rapporteur for Human Rights for the last seven years.
    The rapporteur’s latest report by Ahmed Shaheed to the U.N. General Assembly’s Third Committee in October says that Iran’s human rights record shows no sign of improvement. In addition to citing the plethora of executions, many other human rights issues in Iran were also mentioned, including gender discrimination and a constant denial of rights of the Iranian people through practice and legislation.
    The topic of Iran’s human rights record was not broached in the recent nuclear negotiations. The United States, in particular, made no demands for the release of the three Americans being held in Iranian prisons on false charges as a precondition for the deal.
    One American being held in Iran, Pastor Saeed Abedini, who was in Iran setting up an orphanage and accused of undermining state security, was transferred from the notorious Evin prison to the even more dangerous Rajai Shahr prison on the eve of the nuclear negotiations with the West.
    Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj is a facility known to “disappear” inmates. The prison houses the most violent criminals amid horrific conditions and inmates often fall victims to attacks from other inmates. Since arriving in Rajai Shahr, Abedini has been denied visitors

    SPAIN: MUSLIM GROUPS DEMAND CITIZENSHIP FOR MILLIONS

    The demands are for descendants of Muslims expelled from Spain in the Middle Ages when Muslim invaders were kicked out by Christians.

    Muslim groups are demanding Spanish citizenship for potentially millions of descendants of Muslims who were expelled from Spain during the Middle Ages.
    The growing clamor for “historical justice” comes after the recent approval of a law that would grant Spanish citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492.
    Muslim supporters say they are entitled to the same rights and privileges as Jews because both groups were expelled from Spain under similar historical circumstances.
    But historians point out that the Jewish presence in Spain predates the arrival of Christianity in the country and that their expulsion was a matter of bigotry. By contrast, the Muslims in Spain were colonial occupiers who called the territory Al-Andalus and imposed Arabic as the official language. Historians say their expulsion was a matter of decolonization.
    In any event, the descendants of Muslims expelled from Spain are believed to number in the millions—possibly tens of millions—and most of them now live in North Africa. Observers say that by granting citizenship to all of them, Spain, virtually overnight, would end up with the largest Muslim population in the European Union.
    Much of the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by Muslim conquerors known as the Moors from 711 until 1492, when the Moorish Kingdom of Granada surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs of Spain (Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon), in what is known as the Christian Reconquest.
    But the final Muslim expulsion from Granada did not take place until over a century later, beginning in 1609, when King Philip III decreed the expulsion of the Moriscos.
    The Moriscos—Moors who decided to convert to Catholicism after the Reconquest rather than leave Spain—were suspected of being nominal Catholics who continued to practice Islam in secret. From 1609 through 1614, the Spanish monarchy forced an estimated 350,000 Moriscos to leave Spain for Muslim North Africa.
    Today, up to five million descendants of the Moriscos are living in Morocco alone; there are millions more living in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Tunisia and Turkey.
    In a recent essay published by the Morocco-based newspaper Correo Diplomático, the Morisco-Moroccan journalist Ahmed Bensalh wrote that the “decision to grant Spanish citizenship to the grandchildren of the Hebrews in Spain in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, while ignoring the Moriscos, the grandsons of the Muslims, is without doubt, flagrant segregation and unquestionable discrimination, as both communities suffered equally in Spain at that time. The decision could also be considered by the international community to be an historic act of absolute immorality and injustice…This decision is absolutely disgraceful and dishonorable.”
    Bensalh then went on to threaten Spain: “Is Spain aware of what might be assumed when it makes peace with some and not with others? Is Spain aware of what this decision could cost? Has Spain considered that it could jeopardize the massive investments that Muslims have made on its territory? Does Spain have alternatives to the foreign investment from Muslims if they ever decide to move that capital to other destinations due to the discrimination against Muslims?”
    Bensalh is one of many Muslim journalists, historians and academics who are demanding that Spain treat Moriscos the same way it treats Sephardic Jews.
    Consider Jamal Bin Ammar al-Ahmar, an “Andalus-Algerian” university professor at the Ferhat Abbas University in Sétif in northeastern Algeria. Al-Ahmar has been engaged in a six-year campaign to persuade Spanish King Juan Carlos to identify and condemn those who expelled the Muslims from Al-Andalus in the fifteenth century. Al-Ahmar is also demanding that millions of descendants of the Moriscos expelled from Spain be allowed to return there.
    In a letter addressed to the Spanish monarch, Al-Ahmar calls for a “full legal and historical investigation of the war crimes that were perpetrated on the Muslim population of Andalusia by the French, English, European and papal crusaders, whose victims were our poor miserable people, after the collapse of Islamic rule in Andalusia.”
    The letter speaks of “the injustice inflicted on the Muslim population of Andalusia who are still suffering in the diaspora in exile since 1492.”
    Al-Ahmar wants the Spanish monarch to apologize “on behalf of his ancestors” and to assume “responsibility for the consequences” this would entail. He says it is necessary “to identify criminals, to convict retroactively, while at the same time to identify and compensate victims for their calamities and restore their titles.” This process would culminate with “a decree that allows immigrants to return to their homes in Andalusia, and grant them full citizenship rights and restoration of all their properties.”
    The Moroccan historian Hasan Aourid believes Spain has a policy of “double standards” vis-à-vis the Moriscos. Aourid—who recently wrote a novel, entitled “The Moriscos,” to “remember the tragedy of those expelled from Al-Andalus”—told an audience at the Casablanca International Book Fair that Spain cannot become “reconciled with itself without recognizing its Moorish dimension” and asked if “the suffering was lower for Muslims than for Jews.”
    The Association for the Historical Legacy of Al-Andalus, a group dedicated to reviving the memory of the Muslim presence in Spain, says the Spanish government should treat Muslims and Jews the same way. By failing to offer Spanish citizenship to both groups, Muslims would become victims of “selective racism,” said the president of the association, Bayib Loubaris.
    Spain is unlikely to concede to these demands anytime soon. While few deny there are potentially millions of descendants of Moriscos living in North Africa today, the challenge lies in reconstructing reliable genealogies to determine legitimate heirs.
    The issue of who is a Morisco and who is not will be a topic for discussion at a major international conference—”The Descendants of the Andalusian Moriscos in Morocco, Spain and Portugal”—to be held in Tangier from April 4-6, 2014.
    But even if such genealogies could be compiled, calls to naturalize the descendants of expelled Muslims are sure to be opposed for another reason: the fact that the expulsion of the Muslims was part of a war to end the occupation of Spain by North African invaders.

    A Muslim leader warns people in “war zone” Britain to “wake up” to the possibility of more attacks against soldiers.

    An influential Muslim leader in Kenya has told Sky News that Britain is “at war” with Islam and the attack against soldier Lee Rigby was justified.

    Makaburi, whose real name is Abubaker Shariff Ahmed, also warned there will certainly be more attacks against British soldiers in the future.

    “This is a war,” he told me. “British people need to wake up to that.”

    Makaburi has been indicted by the United Nations, which has described him as a “leading facilitator and recruiter of young Kenyan Muslims for violent militant activity in Somalia”.

    In a number of interviews with me at his home in Mombasa, Makaburi has denied all the accusations.

    However, he insists that Britain’s military involvement in places like Iraq and Afghanistan means attacks on British soldiers are deserved.

    He launched into a tough defence of Michael Adebolajo, saying: “Michael was a Muslim soldier and he was fighting a Christian soldier.”

    When I interjected, saying the knife attack against Lee Rigby had taken place on a street in south London and not a battlefield, Makaburi said: “But Britain is a war zone. Britain is at war. It has started a war against Islam and Michael was being a good Muslim soldier.”

    He went on to say Adebolajo would be rewarded for his bravery in heaven.

    His words almost exactly mirrored Adebolajo’s own in court when explaining his actions in Woolwich, despite my latest interview with Makaburi having taken place before Adebolajo’s statements in London.

    Makaburi’s interpretation of the Koran means he is firmly of the belief that decisions by the British Government dating back to Tony Blair’s involvement in Iraq have made British soldiers legitimate targets, whether on home soil or abroad on duty.

    He went on to suggest that the British public could also be targeted because of their “support” for the Government.

    The cleric also claimed that MI6 agents had attempted to recruit Adebolajo, saying it was them who organised for the young man to be deported back to the UK rather than stand trial in Kenya.

    Adebolajo was arrested in Kenya in 2010 trying to catch a boat to Somalia but despite appearing in court, he was released and allowed to return to Britain.

    “It is MI6 which is to blame for what happened to the soldier in London,” Makaburi said.

    “They came and got him out of jail here and interfered with our rules here. They are to blame.”

    Four people were confirmed dead and seven injured in the unrest, according to the Kenya Red Cross, and a church was set ablaze. The violence unleashed bubbling religious tensions in the wake of the terrorist attack last month on a shopping mall in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, which left more than 60 people dead and investigators grasping for answers.

    The cleric, Sheik Ibrahim Ismail, also known as Ibrahim Omar, was killed Thursday night along with three others when their car was sprayed with bullets as they drove along Mombasa’s palm-fringed coastal highway. Sheik Ismail’s predecessor, Sheik Aboud Rogo Mohammed, a radical cleric, was killed last year in similar circumstances. He had been linked to the Shabab, the Somali Islamist militant group that has claimed responsibility for the attack at the Westgate mall in Nairobi.

    Sheik Ismail was widely recognized in Mombasa as advocating controversial Islamist policies in Somalia, as his predecessor did, and was said to have spoken positively of the Westgate mall attack.

    By late Friday morning, after prayer services, Muslim youths were pouring out of the mosque where Sheik Ismail had preached, throwing together makeshift furniture barricades in the streets, according to witnesses reached by telephone and local news reports. Security personnel in helmets and protective vests tried to contain the rioting.

    But demonstrators smashed windows, left tires burning in the street and hurled stones at police officers in running street battles, television footage showed. Black smoke rose from the white Salvation Army church. Footage showed several officers huddled behind an auto rickshaw, seeking cover from rioters, some with red-and-white scarves wrapped around their faces.

    The situation in the country since the mall attack remains tense. Witnesses have said that one or more of the attackers may have escaped, and fears of a follow-up assault are running high. Muslims, both Somalis from the country’s large diaspora and native Kenyans, have been bracing for reprisal attacks.

    On Friday, the police said no one had been arrested in the killings of the sheik and the others in the car. “Right now, the area is calm,” said a Kenyan police spokeswoman in Nairobi, Zipporah Mboroki. “We are investigating the cause of the shooting.”

    The Kenyan authorities this week urged calm in the wake of the Nairobi attack, and called particularly for Kenyan Muslims and non-Muslims to stay united. Muslims were among the dead in the attack on the mall, as well as among the rescuers hailed here as heroes. But the attackers allowed some Muslims to leave unharmed, in what may have been in part an attempt to sow dissent.

    The murders and strife in Mombasa have stoked fears that Kenya could slide into further bloodshed. The widespread violence after the disputed election in 2007, which claimed the lives of more than 1,100 people, laid bare Kenya’s fragile stability.

    Followers of Sheik Ismail said they believed that the killings were political, and that his death was the beginning of the feared retribution against Muslims after the mall siege.

    “The police are killing people while saying it is a war against terrorism; this is a war against Islam,” said another radical cleric, Abubaker Shariff Ahmed, according to Agence France-Presse.

      After the police entered the Musa mosque, with shoes, they shot randomly killing the Imam and injuring others with bullets…! So, the Muslims rioted for injustice…anybody would do that to find a brother or a father killed so cruelly, that but they did NOT retaliate in killing others!!

      The spread of any hatred is NOT tolerated here nor should it be accepted in any other country and arrests should be made but killing….point blank in front of the public, without any validation?

      Over 28 Million Africans have been enslaved in the Muslim world during the past 14 centuries While much has been written concerning the Transatlantic slave trade, surprisingly little attention has been given to the Islamic slave trade across the Sahara, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
      While the European involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade to the Americas lasted for just over three centuries, the Arab involvement in the slave trade has lasted fourteen centuries, and in some parts of the Muslim world is still continuing to this day. A comparison of the Muslim slave trade to the American slave trade reveals some interesting contrasts.
      While two out of every three slaves shipped across the Atlantic were men, the proportions were reversed in the Muslim slave trade.
      Two women for every man were enslaved by the Muslims.
      While the mortality rate for slaves being transported across the Atlantic was as high as 10%, the percentage of slaves dying in transit in the Transsahara and East African slave trade was between 80 and 90%!
      While almost all the slaves shipped across the Atlantic were for agricultural work, most of the slaves destined for the Muslim Middle East were for sexual exploitation as concubines, in harems, and for military service.
      While many children were born to slaves in the Americas, and millions of their descendants are citizens in Brazil and the USA to this day, very few descendants of the slaves that ended up in the Middle East survive.

      MUSLIM ARABS CASTERATED MOST BLACK MALE SLAVES

      WHY DID ARAB MUSLIMS CASTERATE MALE BLACK SLAVES & USE BLACK WOMEN AS BROOD MARES?

      Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) made major contributions to biological and reproductive theory that would hold sway until the Renaissance period. For instance, his notion that conception originates solely from male seed, implanted into an otherwise dormant female body dominated reproductive discourse for centuries after his death.

      More than 2,000 years after Aristotle asserted that men were the real reproductive powerhouses, Dr. Martin Berry finally figured out that it takes two to make a thing go right.       While Christian Reformers spearheaded the antislavery abolitionist movements in Europe and North America, and Great Britain mobilized her Navy, throughout most of the 19th Century, to intercept slave ships and set the captives free, there was no comparable opposition to slavery within the Muslim world.
      Even after Britain outlawed the slave trade in 1807 and Europe abolished the slave trade in 1815, Muslim slave traders enslaved a further 2 million Africans. This despite vigorous British Naval activity and military intervention to limit the Muslim slave trade.
      By some calculations the number of victims of the 14 centuries of Muslim slave trade could exceed 180 million. Nearly 100 years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in America, and 130 years after all slaves within the British Empire were set free by parliamentary decree, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, in 1962, and Mauritania in 1980, begrudgingly removed legalized slavery from their statute books.
      And this only after international pressure was brought to bear. Today numerous international organizations document that slavery still continues in some Muslim countries.
      Reports on slavery in Sudan, Mauritania for instance needs looking into. Recently, a former slave from the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, Mende Nazer, had her autobiography: “Slave: My True Story” published. Mende Nazer was an alleged slave in Sudan. She was made famous by her transfer to England to serve a diplomatic family.
      Mende Nazer reports that she was abducted and sold into slavery in Sudan when she was a child of twelve or thirteen (she doesn’t know when she was born). She lived in a village of the Karko Nuba in the Nuba mountains of Sudan with her family. The village was attacked one night. Mende fled with her family into the mountains.
      She became separated from her family, and when a man caught her and told her he would protect her, she believed him. She had already seen people killed in front of her. The man told her to stay with a group of children.
      Later, the raiders came and took all of the children to the town of Dilling, there the children were taken by families to serve as servants.
      Mende also reports that she was taken by a woman from Khartoum whom she served for six or seven years. She had to do all the hard work of the household, and sleep on the floor of the garden shed.
      She was never paid anything for her labor, and was frequently beaten. She wanted to leave, but had no money and nowhere to go, and was afraid to go to the police. The woman of the house said that she owned Mende, and called Mende her ‘Abda’, or slave.
      Eventually Mende was sent to London to work as a domestic. After several months Mende escaped and claimed asylum. At first, the Home Office rejected her claim in October 2002. In November, the Home Office overturned its decision and granted Mende asylum.

      THE RACISM & SLAVERY OF ISLAM
      Racism is one of the greatest criminal acts practiced by man against man. And Islam is the most racist, bigoted, discriminatory ideology ever created by man.
      Racism is the belief that inherent different traits in human racial groups justify discrimination. It is applied especially to the practice or advocacy of racial discrimination of a pernicious nature (i.e. which harms particular groups of people). Modern usage often equates “racism” and “racial discrimination” and defines the latter term only as applying to pernicious practices.
      Racism is popularly associated with various activities that are illegal or commonly considered harmful, such as extremism, hatred, xenophobia, (malignant or forced) exploitation, separatism, racial supremacy, mass murder (for the purpose of genocide), genocide denial, vigilantism (hate crimes, terrorism), etc.
      WHY ISLAM IS THE MOST RACIST IDEOLOGY EVER CONCEIVED BY MAN? As you will read, Arabs believe they are a superior race and have the right to rape, torture, kill because the Quran being in Arabic non-Arabic people are inferior and are to be treated like slaves. This is sanctified by God in the Quran.
      RACISM AND SLAVERY ARE DIVINE ETERNAL INSTITUTIONS OF GOD
      All human beings, irrespective of race or color, are created equal in terms of rights and dignity. Assuming that one human being is lesser than another and worth being a slave or property of another person is abhorrent to civilized conscience. Slavery is one of the vilest institutions ever created by man. Slavery is a form of vile racism.
      In Islam, God is a slaver, who sanctions enslaving other people by Muslims in the Quran. Prophet Muhammad was a slaver, who took 20% from the profits derived from the sale of slaves. He also owned 40 slaves. He beat and raped his slaves. He hated the Blacks and compared them to Satan. Some 120 million Blacks were murdered by Muslims, the greatest holocaust in history. Of hunted Black slaves, some 75% of them died on the way to Islamic markets. All Black male slaves were castrated. While most black slaves sent to the Americas could marry and have families, most of the male black slaves destined for the Muslim world were castrated. Millions more died in the unhygienic operation for castrating them, and most of the black children born to the women were killed at birth.
      It was noted that black slaves were castrated “based on the assumption that the blacks had an ungovernable sexual appetite.
      Below are some of the commands of Islamic God, sanctioning slavery:
      Sura 2 (The Cow), Verse 178:
      “O you who believe! retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the slain, the free for the free, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female, but if any remission is made to any one by his (aggrieved) brother, then prosecution (for the bloodwit) should be made according to usage, and payment should be made to him in a good manner; this is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy; so whoever exceeds the limit after this he shall have a painful chastisement.”
      Slavery is mentioned in this verse as part of Islam’s criminal law clearly indicating that slavery is an eternal divine institution in Islam, a part and parcel of Islamic societies.
      Sura 24 (The Light), Verse 31:
      “And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.”
      This is the famous Sura enjoining the veiling of women. Those before whom the Muslim women need not veil themselves are “those whom their right hands possess”, which means “slaves”. Again God mentions slavery in this verse as a part and parcel of Muslim households. Therefore, slaves are an inseparable part of Muslim societies.
      Sura 23 (The Believers), Verses 1-6:
      “Successful indeed are the believers, Who are humble in their prayers, And who keep aloof from what is vain, And who are givers of poor-rate, And who guard their private parts, Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable.”
      This verses not only sanctions the practice of slavery, but also gives the slave owner unfettered right to use female slaves sexual pleasures.
      Sura 24 (The Light), Verse 32:
      “And marry those among you who are single and those who are fit among your male slaves and your female slaves; if they are needy, Allah will make them free from want out of His grace; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing.”
      This is said to sanction marriages of slaves with slaves and slaves with free persons (including the owner). Owners did not usually marry slaves as they could use them for sexual purposes at will. This dispensation has been used to make slaves marry other slaves. In Islam a child born to a slave couple also is a slave from birth, so this verse gives a great incentive to slave owners to breed slaves. This is another obnoxious aspect of Islamic slavery. Whatever be the other circumstances in which people are made into slaves to make a new-born infant a slave is one of the most cruel and callous. Ye this did not evoke a protest from the Prophet and has been extensively resorted to by Muslims.
      Sura 16 (The Bee), verse 75:
      “Allah sets forth a parable: (consider) a slave, the property of another, (who) has no power over anything, and one whom We have granted from Ourselves a goodly sustenance so he spends from it secretly and openly; are the two alike? (All) praise is due to Allah!”
      This is one of the clearest instances where the institution of slavery is justified in the Quran as a divine dispensation. It deserves close scrutiny. This “parable” contrasts two people a slave who is owned by another and is completely powerless and a freeman on whom Allah has granted “a goodly sustenance” which he can spend openly or secretly as he pleases (perhaps acquiring slaves for himself). Since Allah claims for himself the position of the granter of all benefits (or lack of them) both the freeman’s fortune and the slave’s misfortune are ultimately determined by Allah. By his rhetorical question — “Are the two alike?” — Allah was actually justifying the inequality between the slave and the freeman as a natural thing. Thus a Muslim will have no compunctions or qualms in employing and exploiting slaves (subject only to any conditions that Muhammad may have imposed) because it is what Allah has ordained and “all praise is due to Allah”.
      Sura 33 (The Clans), Verse 50:
      “O Prophet! surely We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those [slaves] whom your right hand possesses out of those whom Allah has given to you as prisoners of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who fled with you; and a believing woman if she gave herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet desired to marry her – specially for you, not for the (rest of) believers; We know what We have ordained for them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess in order that no blame may attach to you; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful”.
      As stated before – here, as elsewhere, the term “possessions of the right hand” mean slaves. It is expressly stated that Muhammad’s slaves are given to him by Allah himself to be taken out of his share of the captives in war. It also records the special dispensation given to Muhammad, not available to other Muslims, in the number of wives.
      Sura 39 (The Companions), Verses 29:
      “Allah sets forth an example: There is a slave in whom are (several) partners differing with one another, and there is another slave wholly owned by one man. Are the two alike in condition? (All) praise is due to Allah. Nay! most of them do not know.”
      The example set out here compares joint ownership of a slave by many owners and the single ownership by one person. Allah asks rhetorically whether the two cases are the same. Of course, they are not and it is clear that Muhammad prefers single ownership. In fact, this is why he established the rule that after a military campaign the captives were allocated to each of his soldiers individually not collectively, with himself keeping a fifth of the captives as his personal slaves.
      Sura 70 (The Ways of Ascent), verses 29-35:
      “And those who guard their private parts, Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess — for these surely are not to be blamed, But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits — And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant And those who are upright in their testimonies, And those who keep a guard on their prayer, Those shall be in gardens, honored.”
      These verses are similar to Sura 23.93-96 and gives the right to slave owners to have sexual relation with female slaves. The only difference is that the earlier reference may leave some doubt as to whether both males and female slaves are meant. These verses clearly show that it is only female slaves that are meant.
      Quran 4:3:
      “Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.”
      This verse is saying a Muslim man can have sex with his female slaves (obtained in war) just like with married wives (up to four). The divine institution of Islamic slavery, including the sex-slavery, is the vilest of institutions ever created in history.
      Allah, the Islamic God, thus, sanctions slavery as well as use of female slaves for pleasures of men – the vilest practice, albeit an divinely-sanctioned one, ever exercised by man. (For article titled, Islam, Slavery and Rape, go to: http://www.islamreform.net/new-page-62.htm)
      SLAVERY IN PROPHETIC TRADITIONS
      Following is just a small sample of more teachings of God’s divine institution of slavery.
      Muhammad’s position on freeing slaves
      1) In one instance, a man freed a slave that he kept as a sexual partner. When Muhammad heard what happened, he auctioned the boy and sold him for 800 dirhams to Na-eem Ebn Abdullah Al- Nahham. (Sahih Muslim, vol. 7, p. 83)
      2) According to Muhammad, the punishment for committing adultery is different with a free-woman and a slave-woman. The man must be flogged one-hundred stripes and be exiled for one year. The free woman must be stoned to death. But the slave-woman (since she has a monetary value) will not be exiled or killed, she is to be flogged one-hundred stripes. If the violation is repeated, the slave-woman is to be sold. (Sahih Al Bukhari vol. 8:821 & 822)
      Islam Looked Down on Blacks
      Islam’s sacred texts contain explicit denigrating remarks about black people.
      Muhammad referred to Blacks as “raisin heads”. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1.662, 9.256).
      In another Hadith, Muhammad is quoted as saying that Blacks are “pug-nosed slaves”. (Sahih Muslim vol. 9, p. 46-47).
      A Slave is not Entitled to Property or Money
      Ibn Hazm says in Vol. 6, Part 9,
      “The slave is not permitted to write a will when he dies, nor can he bequeath (anything) because his entire possessions belong to his master.”
      Testimony of Slaves inadmissible
      In Vol. 35, p. 409 Ibn Timiyya remarks:
      “The Shafi’i, Malik, and Abu Hanifa, who are the legists of Islam, assert that the testimony of the slave is not acceptable.”
      The “Ordinances of the Qur’an” by the Shafi’i (part II, p. 142), stipulates that,
      “The witnesses must be from among our freeman, not from our slaves, but from freeman who belong to our religion!”
      BLACK SLAVES ON MATTERS OF SEX & MARRIAGE
      1. The Slave cannot choose for himself.
      This was confirmed by all the Muslim scholars on the authority of Muhammad. In Vol. 6, Part 9, p. 467, Ibn Hazm said,
      “If a slave gets married without the permission of his master, his marriage will be invalid and he must be whipped because he has committed adultery. He must be separated from his wife. She is also regarded as an adulteress because Muhammad said, ‘Any slave who gets married without the approval of his master is a prostitute.'”
      The same text is quoted by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (Part 5, p. 117 of “Zad al-Maad”), as well as Ibn Timiyya (Vol. 32, p. 201). Malik Ibn Anas relates (Vol. 2, Part 4) more than that. He says (pp. 199, 201, 206),
      “The slave does not get married without the approval of his master. If he is a slave to two masters, he has to obtain the approval of both men.”
      2. The male slave and the female slave are forced to get married.
      Malik Ibn Anas says explicitly,
      “The master has the right to force his male or female slave to marry without obtaining their approval” (Vol. 2, p. 155).
      “The master does not have the right to force the female slave to wed to an ugly black slave if she is beautiful and agile unless in case of utmost necessity” (refer to Ibn Hazm, Vol. 6, Part 9, p. 469).
      In matters of sex and marriage, Ibn Timiyya states:
      “The one who owns the mother also owns her children. Being the master of the mother makes him the owner of her children whether they were born to a husband or they were illegitimate children. Therefore, the master has the right to have sexual intercourse with the daughters of his maid-slave because they are his property, provided he does not sleep with the mother at the same time” (Vol. 35, p. 54).
      Price of Slaves
      “If an owned slave assaults somebody and damages his property, his crime will be tied to his neck. It will be said to his master, ‘If you wish, you can pay the fine for the damages done by your slave or deliver him to be sentenced to death.’ His master has to choose one of the two options – either the value of the slave and his price or the damage the slave has caused” (Vol. 32, p. 202, Ibn Timiyya).
      Ishaq, p. 243:
      “I heard the Apostle say: ‘Whoever wants to see Satan should look at Nabtal!’ He was a black man with long flowing hair, inflamed eyes, and dark ruddy cheeks…. Allah sent down concerning him: ‘To those who annoy the Prophet there is a painful doom.” [9:61] “Gabriel came to Muhammad and said, ‘If a black man comes to you his heart is more gross than a donkey’s.'”
      Ishaq, p. 144:
      “A rock was put on a slave’s chest. When Abu Bakr complained, they said, ‘You are the one who corrupted him, so save him from his plight.’ I will do so,’ said Bakr. ‘I have a black slave, tougher and stronger than Bilal, who is a heathen. I will exchange him. The transaction was carried out.”
      Tabari, II:11:
      “Shem, the son of Noah was the father of the Arabs, the Persians, and the Greeks; Ham was the father of the Black Africans; and Japheth was the father of the Turks and of Gog and Magog who were cousins of the Turks. Noah prayed that the prophets and apostles would be descended from Shem and kings would be from Japheth. He prayed that the African’s color would change so that their descendants would be slaves to the Arabs and Turks.”
      Tabari, II:21:
      “Ham [Africans] begat all those who are black and curly-haired, while Japheth [Turks] begat all those who are full-faced with small eyes, and Shem [Arabs] begat everyone who is handsome of face with beautiful hair. Noah prayed that the hair of Ham’s descendants would not grow beyond their ears, and that whenever his descendants met Shem’s, the latter would enslave them.”
      Ishaq, p. 450:
      “It is your folly to fight the Apostle, for Allah’s army is bound to disgrace you. We brought them to the pit. Hell was their meeting place. We collected them there, black slaves, men of no descent.”
      Bukhari 4.52.137:
      “The Prophet said, ‘Let the negro slave of Dinar perish. And if he is pierced with a thorn, let him not find anyone to take it out for him…. If he [the black slave] asks for anything it shall not be granted, and if he needs intercession [to get into paradise], his intercession will be denied.'”
      Slavery, raping slave girls, owning slaves, selling boys and women as trophies of war, sharing the booty (including slaves) obtained in raids and wars with Allah are all central teachings of Islam. Slavery was one of the major driving forces behind the expansion of Islam. After assuming his prophetic career, Prophet Muhammad enslaved large number of men and women, owned dozens of slaves, he sold many slaves as well as used the female captives as sex-slaves on top his dozen wives. Islam is such as vile, evil cult, which has been embraced by today’s civilized world’s 1.2 billion people as the perfect guide to life and its Prophet as perfect human being, the greatest apostle of God, a man of peace.

          Like or not, toilet protocols, as prescribed in Islam, are mandatory to all Muslims. Non Muslims might loathe reading this episode on Islamic toilet voodoo, as it contains obnoxious, tasteless, indecent, and uncivil manners and customs, largely followed by desert Bedouins during Muhammad’s time. Lest we forget, Allah will never forgive a Muslim for deviating from His standard of Islamic toilet habits as demonstrated by Muhammad.

          First, let us focus on a few verses of the Qur’an where Allah says a Muslim must emulate Muhammad’s manners, traditions, and practices at all time.
          In verses 3:132 and 4:80 Allah says that obeying Him and Muhammad (i.e., Muhammad’s examples) is mandatory. This means Muslims have no choice but to follow Muhammad’s deeds, as this constitutes the obeying the commands of Allah. A similar command is echoed in verse 33:36 where Allah stipulates that provisions (rules and examples, even toilet rules) set by Allah and Muhammad are binding to all Muslims; there are no alternatives. Ibn Kathir adds more punch to Allah’s command He writes that this verse is general in meaning and applies to all matters, i.e., if Allah and His Messenger decreed a matter, no one has the right to go against that, and no one has any choice or room for personal opinion on that case.
          Allah decrees in verse 33:21 that He has made Muhammad an excellent example for the believers to follow and in verse 68:4 Allah reminds the Muslims that Muhammad is the exalted (ultimate/excellent) standard of character. Ibn Abbas says that Muhammad has great character traits with which Allah has honoured him.
          Allah promises great rewards for emulating Muhammad’s habits, manners, and instructions. In verse 33:71 Allah declares that obeying Allah and Muhammad are the highest achievements, and in verse 3:31 Allah sets a condition that if any Muslim loves Allah then he/she must follow Muhammad, and Allah will forgive his/her sins. Verse 4:13 guarantees paradise for those who blindly obey Muhammad.
          Allah prescribes severe punishment for not emulating Muhammad. In verse 47:33 Allah says that if Muslims do not obey Muhammad, then He will nullify all their good deeds. In verse 48:13 we read that Allah has prepared a blazing fire for those who reject Him and his apostle Muhammad. In verse 58:5 Allah has decreed that those who reject Allah and His messenger (Muhammad) will be reduced to dust.
          Here is what Ash Shifa (p.316) writes about imitating Muhammad absolutely:
          It is also known that the Companions were in the habit of imitating the actions of the Prophet, whatever they were and in every way, just as they obeyed whatever he said. They threw away their signet rings when he threw his away. They discarded their sandals when he discarded his. They used as a proof for facing Jerusalem when going to the lavatory the fact that Ibn ‘Umar saw him doing so. Others found a proof for other actions both in the category of worship and general custom by saying, “I saw the Messenger of Allah do it.”
          Once we acknowledge Allah’s dicta in the above paragraphs we will understand why the Muslims follow a few weird toilet manners, though those habits were the customs of the Arab Bedouins millennia ago. In Islam, there is no date of expiry of Muhammad’s traditions and practices they are eternal.
          It is also important to keep in perspective the primitive toilet facilities in Muhammad’s household. The truth is: Muhammad, including his wives, used to relieve themselves in the open desert, under the open sky. The males could defecate any time of the day or night, but Muhammad’s wives were restricted to answer their calls of nature only at night. Described by a few ahadith, we have a glimpse of the abject toilet facilities in Muhammad’s family. Here are a few examples:
          Wives of Muhammad answered the call of nature in the open field…(Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.148, 149)
          During Hajj some of Muhammad’s companions had their penises dripping with prostrate fluid… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 2.10.1785)
          When defecating together (two men) do not converse, do not look at each others private parts… (Sunaan ibn Majah, 1.342)
          Carry three stones while relieving yourself in desert…(Mishkat, 1.186)
          To be certain, let us read in full, one hadis from Sahih Bukhari:
          Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 4, Number 148:
          Narrated ‘Aisha:
          The wives of the Prophet used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqia at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. ‘Umar used to say to the Prophet “Let your wives be veiled,” but Allah’s Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam’a the wife of the Prophet went out at ‘Isha’ time and she was a tall lady. ‘Umar addressed her and said, “I have recognized you, O Sauda.” He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of “Al-Hijab” (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).
          The above hadis also tells us why Muhammad imposed veils on Islamic women.
          We will now examine a few outstanding features of Islamic toilets.

          JINNS & DEVILS HAUNT ISLAMIC TOILETS
          If we happen to be in an Islamic Paradise, we might be completely surprised that many Muslims still believe these Islamic voodoos. For example, if you are in a village in Bangladesh or Pakistan, you will come across with many devout Muslims who will vouch that they had seen jinns inside their primitive latrines. A few of them might even swear that the local Imam or an Islamic mendicant had been able to chase out jinns and devils from their toilets when the jinns or devils caught their women in the toilets. Note that it is usually the women (pretty ones) who fall victims to the jinns and devils residing in rural Islamic latrines.
          Please do not laugh. If we were to believe the following ahadith then it is certainly true that Islamic toilets are the perennial abodes of jinns and devils.
          In Sunaan Abu Dawud (1.0006) we read that toilets are frequented by jinns and devils. Sunaan ibn Majah (1.296) writes that devils visit public toilets.
          Let us read in full the first hadis:
          Sunaan Abu Dawud, Book 1, Number 0006:
          Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam:
          The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: These privies are frequented by the jinns and devils. So when anyone amongst you goes there, he should say: “I seek refuge in Allah from male and female devils.”

          PRAY BEFORE ENTERING AN ISLAMIC TOILET
          Since jinns and devils visit Islamic toilets, Muhammad instructed his followers to offer prayer when entering a lavatory. We have already read a hadis on this. Here are a few more.
          Pray when answering the call of nature…(Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.144)
          When you enter a lavatory say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from wicked and noxious things.”… (Sahih Muslim, 3.0729)
          When entering a toilet, say a prayer: O’ Allah I seek refuge with you from all offensive and wicked things (evil deeds and evil spirits)… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.19)
          To screen you from jinns, when visiting toilet say Bismillah… (Sunaan Tirmidhi, 130)

          DO NOT HOLD YOUR PENIS WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND
          Please do not be offended when you read this weird Islamic Toilet manner. In Islam, it is haram to hold your penis with your right hand when you defecate or urinate. Regarding your penis manner, while in an Islamic Toilet, there are many ahadith, in all the Sahih Sitta (the six authentic) on this specification of Allah. In many of these ahadith Muhammad (that is, Allah), specified that when inside a toilet one may use his left hand to hold his penis. We may wonder about women, I am yet to find a hadis where Allah has specified that women cannot hold (touch) their pudenda with their right hand. So we may assume that women are free to use either hand to cleanse themselves.
          Here is a collection of a few interesting ahadith on Islamic manners of cleaning yourself in the toilet.
          Do not breath while drinking water; do not touch penis in lavatory and do not cleanse private parts with your right hand… (Sahih Bukhari, 1. 4.155)
          While urinating, do not hold penis with your right hand… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.156)
          While in a toilet do not touch penis with your right hand… (Sahih Muslim, 2.0512)
          While urinating or defecating do not touch your penis with your right hand… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.1.0031)
          When urinating do not touch your penis with your right hand… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.24, 25)
          Use left hand for private parts…(Mishkat, 1.185)
          Do not touch male organ with right hand… (Mishkat, 1.183)
          Use left hand for touching private parts… (Mishkat, 1.185)

          RULES ON ISLAMIC DEFECATION (HAVING A SHIT)
          In the Qur’an there is very little or none about Allah’s stipulation on Islamic Toilet procedures. However, some Islamic scholars believe that Allah revealed verse 9:108 in connection with the proper method of cleaning oneself after defecating. Let us read verse 9:108 from the Qur’an and a hadis from Sunaan
          Abu Dawud:
          9:108. Never stand you therein. Verily, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety is more worthy that you stand therein (to pray). In it are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allâh loves those who make themselves clean and pure (i.e. who clean their private parts with dust [i.e. to be considered as soap) and water from urine and stools, after answering the call of nature] (Tr. Hilali and Khan).
          Please note that the translators have inserted their own comments. They are of the opinion that in Islamic ritual of defecating dust may be considered as soap.
          Here is what a hadis says:
          Sunaan Abu Dawud, Book 1, Number 0044:
          Narrated Abu Hurayrah:
          The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The following verse was revealed in connection with the people of Quba’: “In it are men who love to be purified” (ix.108). He (Abu Hurayrah) said: They used to cleanse themselves with water after easing. So the verse was revealed in connection with them.
          One compulsory provision of Islamic toilet manner is that during defecation a Muslim must position himself in such a manner that neither his face (that is, penis or women’s vulva) nor his back (that is, buttock) should face the Qibla (Kaba). Muslims must obey this rule whether defecating in an open desert or inside a latrine in his house.
          Here are a few ahadith on this:
          While defecating in the open space neither face nor turn your back towards Qibla (Kaba); instead, face the east or the west… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.146)
          While excreting or urinating do not face the Qibla…(Sahih Muslim, 2.0504)
          When defecating in the desert do not face Qibla nor turn your backside towards Qibla; use three sods and your right hand to cleanse your private parts… (Sunaan Tirmidhi, 128)
          While defecating do not face or show backside to Allah… (Mishkat, 1.185)
          Interestingly, Muhammad, at times, had violated Allah’s rules. Here is the proof:
          Muhammad urinated by turning his face towards the Qibla…(Sunaan ibn Majah, 1.325)
          Muhammad defecated facing Jerusalem… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.147)
          Muhammad stipulated that if you wear a ring, you must remove it when going inside a toilet. True to this funny Islamic Toilet protocol, a hadis in Sunaan Abu Dawud (1.0019) and Sunaan ibn Majah (1.3033) state that Muhammad used to remove his ring when visiting a toilet.
          Another interesting hadis in Sahih Muslim (7.2942) says that a Muslim can defecate in a river. In this case there might not be any necessity to cleanse his anus, as river water will do the job. Curiously, a hadis in Sunaan Nasai (1.50, 51) says that having defecated, and having cleansed yourself, you should rub two hands on earth.
          Here are a few more interesting ahadith on defecating in Islamic manner:
          After defecating do not use bones or dung; use stones to cleanse yourself… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.157)
          Use odd number of stones (minimum three) to clean your private parts… (Sahih Bukhari, 1. 4.162)
          Use three stones to clean yourself after defecating… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.0040)
          When visiting a toilet carry three stones with you… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.1.0040)
          After you defecate, use two clods of earth; do not use dung… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.42)
          If you defecate in a desert use three stones, no need to use water… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.44)

          RULES ON ISLAMIC URINATION
          If we are confounded with bizarre Islamic rules on defecating, here are more rules on urinating Islamically.
          1. Do not urinate in stagnant water… (Sunaan ibn Majah, 1.343)
          2. Do not urinate standing; Umar did that but Muhammad reprobated him… (Sunaan Tirmidhi, 133)
          3. At night you may urinate in a vessel… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.32)
          4. At night Muhammad used to urinate on a wooden vessel… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.0024)
          5. Do not urinate in a hole… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.34)
          6. Urinate in a soft ground… (Mishkat, 1.185)
          7. Do not urinate in a place of bath and then take bath there… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.36)
          8. Do not return salutation when you are urinating… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.37)
          9. After urinating sprinkle water on your private parts. (Sunaan Nasai, 1.136, 137)
          As was often the case, Muhammad had violated his own rules on urination.

          ISLAMIC BATHING RULES

          Let us read in full the first hadis:
          Sunaan Abu Dawud, Book 1, Number 0006:
          Narrated Zayd ibn Arqam:
          The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: These privies are frequented by the jinns and devils. So when anyone amongst you goes there, he should say: “I seek refuge in Allah from male and female devils.”

          PRAY BEFORE ENTERING AN ISLAMIC TOILET
          Since jinns and devils visit Islamic toilets, Muhammad instructed his followers to offer prayer when entering a lavatory. We have already read a hadis on this. Here are a few more.
          Pray when answering the call of nature…(Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.144)
          When you enter a lavatory say, “O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from wicked and noxious things.”… (Sahih Muslim, 3.0729)
          When entering a toilet, say a prayer: O’ Allah I seek refuge with you from all offensive and wicked things (evil deeds and evil spirits)… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.19)
          To screen you from jinns, when visiting toilet say Bismillah… (Sunaan Tirmidhi, 130)

          DO NOT HOLD YOUR PENIS WITH YOUR RIGHT HAND
          Please do not be offended when you read this weird Islamic Toilet manner. In Islam, it is haram to hold your penis with your right hand when you defecate or urinate. Regarding your penis manner, while in an Islamic Toilet, there are many ahadith, in all the Sahih Sitta (the six authentic) on this specification of Allah. In many of these ahadith Muhammad (that is, Allah), specified that when inside a toilet one may use his left hand to hold his penis. We may wonder about women, I am yet to find a hadis where Allah has specified that women cannot hold (touch) their pudenda with their right hand. So we may assume that women are free to use either hand to cleanse themselves.
          Here is a collection of a few interesting ahadith on Islamic manners of cleaning yourself in the toilet.
          Do not breath while drinking water; do not touch penis in lavatory and do not cleanse private parts with your right hand… (Sahih Bukhari, 1. 4.155)
          While urinating, do not hold penis with your right hand… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.156)
          While in a toilet do not touch penis with your right hand… (Sahih Muslim, 2.0512)
          While urinating or defecating do not touch your penis with your right hand… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.1.0031)
          When urinating do not touch your penis with your right hand… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.24, 25)
          Use left hand for private parts…(Mishkat, 1.185)
          Do not touch male organ with right hand… (Mishkat, 1.183)
          Use left hand for touching private parts… (Mishkat, 1.185)

          RULES ON ISLAMIC DEFECATION
          In the Qur’an there is very little or none about Allah’s stipulation on Islamic Toilet procedures. However, some Islamic scholars believe that Allah revealed verse 9:108 in connection with the proper method of cleaning oneself after defecating. Let us read verse 9:108 from the Qur’an and a hadis from Sunaan Abu Dawud:
          9:108. Never stand you therein. Verily, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety is more worthy that you stand therein (to pray). In it are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allâh loves those who make themselves clean and pure (i.e. who clean their private parts with dust [i.e. to be considered as soap) and water from urine and stools, after answering the call of nature] (Tr. Hilali and Khan).
          Please note that the translators have inserted their own comments. They are of the opinion that in Islamic ritual of defecating dust may be considered as soap.
          Here is what a hadis says:
          Sunaan Abu Dawud, Book 1, Number 0044:
          Narrated Abu Hurayrah:
          The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The following verse was revealed in connection with the people of Quba’: “In it are men who love to be purified” (ix.108). He (Abu Hurayrah) said: They used to cleanse themselves with water after easing. So the verse was revealed in connection with them.
          One compulsory provision of Islamic toilet manner is that during defecation a Muslim must position himself in such a manner that neither his face (that is, penis or women’s vulva) nor his back (that is, buttock) should face the Qibla (Kaba). Muslims must obey this rule whether defecating in an open desert or inside a latrine in his house.
          Here are a few ahadith on this:
          While defecating in the open space neither face nor turn your back towards Qibla (Kaba); instead, face the east or the west… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.146)
          While excreting or urinating do not face the Qibla…(Sahih Muslim, 2.0504)
          When defecating in the desert do not face Qibla nor turn your backside towards Qibla; use three sods and your right hand to cleanse your private parts… (Sunaan Tirmidhi, 128)
          While defecating do not face or show backside to Allah… (Mishkat, 1.185)
          Interestingly, Muhammad, at times, had violated Allah’s rules. Here is the proof:
          Muhammad urinated by turning his face towards the Qibla…(Sunaan ibn Majah, 1.325)
          Muhammad defecated facing Jerusalem… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.147)
          Muhammad stipulated that if you wear a ring, you must remove it when going inside a toilet. True to this funny Islamic Toilet protocol, a hadis in Sunaan Abu Dawud (1.0019) and Sunaan ibn Majah (1.3033) state that Muhammad used to remove his ring when visiting a toilet.
          Another interesting hadis in Sahih Muslim (7.2942) says that a Muslim can defecate in a river. In this case there might not be any necessity to cleanse his anus, as river water will do the job. Curiously, a hadis in Sunaan Nasai (1.50, 51) says that having defecated, and having cleansed yourself, you should rub two hands on earth.
          Here are a few more interesting ahadith on defecating in Islamic manner:
          After defecating do not use bones or dung; use stones to cleanse yourself… (Sahih Bukhari, 1.4.157)
          Use odd number of stones (minimum three) to clean your private parts… (Sahih Bukhari, 1. 4.162)
          Use three stones to clean yourself after defecating… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.0040)
          When visiting a toilet carry three stones with you… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.1.0040)
          After you defecate, use two clods of earth; do not use dung… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.42)
          If you defecate in a desert use three stones, no need to use water… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.44)

          RULES ON ISLAMIC URINATION
          If we are confounded with bizarre Islamic rules on defecating, here are more rules on urinating Islamically.
          1. Do not urinate in stagnant water… (Sunaan ibn Majah, 1.343)
          2. Do not urinate standing; Umar did that but Muhammad reprobated him… (Sunaan Tirmidhi, 133)
          3. At night you may urinate in a vessel… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.32)
          4. At night Muhammad used to urinate on a wooden vessel… (Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.0024)
          5. Do not urinate in a hole… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.34)
          6. Urinate in a soft ground… (Mishkat, 1.185)
          7. Do not urinate in a place of bath and then take bath there… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.36)
          8. Do not return salutation when you are urinating… (Sunaan Nasai, 1.37)
          9. After urinating sprinkle water on your private parts. (Sunaan Nasai, 1.136, 137)
          As was often the case, Muhammad had violated his own rules on urination.

          ISLAMIC BATHING RULES
          Here are a few interesting rules on Islamic bath (ghusl):
          Females cannot use the leftover water by males, but the males can use the leftover water by females…(Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.0081)
          Muhammad forbade the use of leftover water by females to be used by males…(Sunaan Abu Dawud, 1.0082)
          Muhammad and his wives took bath from the same vessel of water…(Sunaan ibn Majah, 1.379)
          Leprosy is caused by taking bath in water exposed to the sun…(Mishkat, 1.245)

          GUNFIRE ERUPTS AS POLICE RAID RADICAL KENYAN MOSQUE

          (Reuters) – Gunfire erupted in and around a mosque in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa on Sunday following a raid by armed police who had received a tip-off that Muslim youths were being radicalized and trained for militant attacks.
          The raid sparked violent protests inside the Masjid Mussa mosque in the city’s run-down Majengo neighbourhood and in the surrounding streets. Police fired teargas and live rounds over the heads of taunting crowds, who hurled stones back.
          Breaking up Islamist militant networks among its Muslim minority has become a priority for Kenya as it tries to end attacks by Somali militants and their sympathizers bent on punishing it for sending troops to fight al Shabaab rebels.
          The cost of failure was laid bare when al Shabaab gunmen attacked a Nairobi shopping mall in September, killing at least 67 people. Western investigators said local militant networks helped the attackers carry out the assault.
          “They attacked our mosque, but they’re not going to kill our spirit,” one youth shouted from behind a wall in the mosque’s compound. “Jihad is the way to go.”
          More than four hours after the initial police swoop, gunshots continued to echo around the neighbourhood of ramshackle buildings and garbage-filled gutters.
          Mombasa’s police chief Robert Kitur said the raid followed a tip off. When his officers burst into the mosque, where radical clerics regularly preach, they came under gunfire.
          Kitur said ringleaders shielded themselves behind children and infants, the first time he had seen such a tactic used.
          “We found them engaging in radicalization and training of youths,” Kitur told reporters close to the mosque as the operation went on.
          JIHADI BANNERS
          Police seized black banners emblazoned with jihadi slogans, laptops and DVDs during the raid. Outside the mosque shoes, teargas canisters and spent bullet cartridges were strewn on the ground.
          Many Muslims in Mombasa’s poorer neighborhoods feel marginalized by the predominantly Christian Nairobi government, while the forceful crackdown on Islamist militant recruitment networks in the tourist hub is fuelling resentment.
          But Kenyan security officials say the Masjid Mussa mosque is a hotbed of militant activity, in particular recruitment into local Islamist networks and al Shabaab in Somalia.
          Masked gunmen in August 2012 shot dead a firebrand cleric, Aboud Rogo, who often taught at the mosque and whom the United States and Kenya accused of recruiting and fundraising for the al Qaeda-linked Somali rebel group.
          A year later, Rogo’s protege was gunned down in a strikingly similar attack. Both murders triggered violent unrest in the city.
          Worshippers at the Masjid Mussa mosque accuse the security services of operating a death squad, a charge the police denies.
          Kitur said the security forces had arrested more than 100 people during Sunday’s clashes and two officers had been wounded. One policeman was found sprawled in a pool of blood in a bathroom inside the mosque and was in critical condition.
          “We found him locked up in a bathroom after we heard him groaning. It appears like they slaughtered him,” said one armed policeman who withheld his name.

          RADICAL MUSLIM YOUTH ATTACK MOMBASA SHEIKH

          Mombasa Muslim Association chairman Shaahid Sheikh was on Thursday attacked by radical Muslim youths at the troubled Sakina mosque in Mombasa’s Majengo area.
          Shaahid, a trustee of the mosque, was assaulted after Maghrib prayers. He was rushed to hospital seriously injured.
          Worshippers at Sakina said Shaahid had delivered a message opposing the wave of radicalisation and the forceful takeover of mosques by youths preaching “jihad sermons”.
          Shaahid had called media houses for a press conference to be held after the evening prayer at the mosque. Mombasa CID boss Nyaga Gachugi said the matter has been reported at Makupa police station and is being investigated.
          “The youths were angered by the sheikh’s statement and attacked him as he left the mosque. But he was rescued and whisked away,” he said.
          Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers are profiling six key leaders alleged to be behind the recent upsurge in radicalisation in Mombasa and Kisauni mosques.
          On Monday, a radical youth from Majengo, 34-year-old Jamal Salim Mwangi, turned himself in to police after he claimed ATPU officers were trailing him.
          Police confirmed that Salim was under police surveillance for allegedly recruiting youths to fight alongside Somalia’s al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab.
          The radical youths have ousted chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya Sheikh Mohammed Idris and organising secretary Sheikh Mohammed Khalifa from Sakina mosque.
          The youths have attempted to forcefully eject imams at Umar Ibn al Khattab mosque in Kisauni, and Liwatoni and other mosques associated with the CIPK .
          A section of Muslim leaders said the disgruntled youths feel the current Muslim leaders lack legitimacy and do not represent them.
          Reliable police sources indicate that Muslim youths are trained militants linked to slain cleric Sheikh Aboud Rogo. The attack at Sakina mosque came a day after a madrassa teacher was gunned down in Diani, Kwale.
          So far, three people have been killed by gunmen in the similar circumstances in the span of a month. Salim Mwasalim, 60, was shot dead by unknown attackers at around 8pm on Christmas Day at Mwamanga area on his way home from mosque.
          Police said he was stopped by three armed people riding a motorcycle before they shot him from behind.
          Msambweni police boss Jack Ekakoro said the assailants left for an unknown destination while the victim was rushed to Msambweni District Hospital.
          Mwasalim was then referred to Coast General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
          The OCPD said the incident could not have been a normal robbery since nothing stolen from the victim.
          Msambweni District Criminal Investigation Officer Mwenda Ethiaba said the assailants shot the deceased at a close range from behind.
          “We have not arrested any suspect so far but we are doing our best,” the DCIO said. Before Mwasalim died he managed to speak to his son Salim Mwabata about his ordeal.
          Mwabata said his father had just visited a friend when one of the three gangsters shot him. He said his father had tried to run away after he sensed danger.
          Mwabata said his father was a peasant farmer who once worked at Bixa Company in Tiwi.
          “It appears to be an emerging crime in the tourist town of Diani where a gang on the loose is killing people anyhow and stealing nothing from their targets,” Ethiaba said.
          The DCIO put all criminals in the area on notice and asked them to surrender to police before they are caught. “We have started investigations and we want members of public to help us with information,” he appealed.
          Mwasalim’s killing took place a week after Hamadi Boga, a community health worker, was gunned down by unknown people at Kona ya Musa area in Diani.
          Earlier, Hassan Mwayuyu, who was said to be wanted for terrorism, was killed in Tiwi while travelling from Likoni to Ukunda. Muslim clerics have blamed the killings on the ATPU, claiming it targets specific people in the area.
          Police have dismissed the claims. The CIPK South Coast branch chair, Sheikh Amir Banda, said there is a hidden agenda in the killings.
          “Those killed are strong Muslim followers. We want an explanation because the issue is becoming more serious than we thought,” he said.
          Locals remain worried as no one knows where the gang will hit next. However, police insist they have security measures in place.

          Two Pastors Killed in Kenya’s Coastal Area Christian Leaders, Already on Edge, Grow More Fearful
          According to a story by Morning Star News, in the Majengo area of the coastal city where leaders at the Masjid Musa Mosque were suspected of training violent jihadists, the suspects on the night of Feb. 2 killed 59-year-old Lawrence Kazungu Kadenge, an assistant pastor at Glory of God Ministries Church.
          Saying they were looking for militant equipment, authorities had raided the mosque that day, reportedly leaving a Muslim man and a police officer dead and touching off riots.

          In the slaying of Kadenge at his church building, a Christian leader told Morning Star News a neighbor heard one of two suspects say, “Make sure you have killed him – he has been promoting his religion near our mosque.”

          Area Christians believe hard-line Muslims were upset at Kadenge for evangelizing near the mosque and for informing authorities about security threats, he said.

          Police said gunfire from the mosque was directed at them before they fired live rounds and tear gas in the assault on the site. Some youths reportedly raised the black flag of Somalia-based terrorist organization Al Shabaab at the mosque that day.

          “We as the pastors in Mombasa are living in fear because pastors are being eliminated one by one,” said the Christian leader, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons.
          He added, “We need prayers that the church will survive these attacks as we are being targeted by the radical Muslims.”
          A Mombasa police official, Henry Ondieki, reportedly said Muslim youths had distributed leaflets on jihad at the mosque, long suspected of being a recruitment site for terrorist organizations.
          “This is not a mosque for prayers but a base for recruiting Muslim youths to engage in terrorist activities,” Morning Star News reported Ondieki told the Daily Nation.
          On Oct. 19, suspected Islamic extremists in Mombasa killed Pastor Charles “Patrick” Matole of Vikwantani Redeemed Gospel Church following riots associated with the same mosque. Matole had received death threats.
          The murder came a few weeks after rioting in Mombasa by Muslims enraged at the killing of Sheikh Ibrahim Omar and three others on a road near Mombasa.
          During the riots, Muslim youths from the Masjid Musa Mosque shouting “Allahu Akbar (God is Greater)” set fire to the Salvation Army Church building in the Majengo area.
          They accused police of killing the hard-line Islamist sheikh. In the police response to the rampaging Muslim youths, including officers’ efforts to stop them from attacking a Pentecostal church in Mombasa, four people were reportedly killed and several others wounded.
          Omar had been a student of Sheikh Aboud Rogo, also mysteriously killed in his vehicle in Aug. 2012, who had been accused of aiding in recruitment and funding for the Somalia-based Al Shabaab.
          At the Musa Mosque, about 200 meters from the Salvation Army Church building, Morning Star News said Omar reportedly preached inflammatory sermons against non-Muslims.
          According to Kenya’s National Intelligence Service, the imam had invited jihadists from Somalia to bomb targets in Nairobi and Mombasa in retaliation for the killing of Rogo. The same Salvation Army Church building was torched in 2012 in response to the killing of Rogo.
          Al Shabaab, affiliated with Al Qaeda, took responsibility for the assault on the Westgate Shopping Mall on Sept. 21 2013, which killed at least 67 people with dozens still unaccounted for.
          The assailants killed those they could identify as non-Muslims. Al Shabaab has said attacks on Kenyan soil are in retaliation for Kenyan-led African Union forces retaking ground from the Islamic extremist group in its attempt to take over Somalia.

            Such incidents hardly ever occur in our beautiful country of Kenya. Al-Shabab, a Somali extremist group…has never fought for Islam but for their own selfish motives…who call themselves Muslims but it is the mosted hated group by all the Muslims. Recently, they killed more than 70 innocent people of all religions and caste at the Mall, including the Muslims!
